Basal Readers

Ask a Librarian

What is a basal reader? "Any of a series of books designed to teach children to read. Usually a part of a long-term instructional program, basal (or basic) reading programs include a series of readers, workbooks, activity sheets and a teacher's manual, with lessons planned according to grade level, from first to sixth grades."
Unger, Harlow G. Encyclopedia of American Education. New York: Facts on File, 1996.

Basal readers that are currently under adoption by the state of Texas are housed in the VC/UHV Library on the 1st floor behind the Circulation Desk. They are part of the Curriculum Collection .

You can locate a basal reader by doing a subject keyword search in the book Catalog for "basal reading instruction"

Click on a Title in order to see the "Copy/Holdings" record.

Curriculum titles are in the process of a "classification" change.
Some of the books will be classed in LC numbers like the rest of the books in the Library's Main Collection and some will be still classed in the method described below:

Scroll through the Copy/Holdings list to find the needed Grade Level.

The Grade Level will be the 1st two numbers in the Call No. column

Grade Levels range from 0K (Kindergarten) to 12.

Textbooks that contain Basal Reading stories will say "Teachers Ed.",
"Student Ed.", or "Indivdual Story" in the Copy column.

If you wish to browse the basal readers, go to the Curriculum Collection in the VC/UHV Library. The staff on duty can find the grade level you need.

Please contact Ask-a-Librarian or the Media Library (570-4199) if you have any questions.
