- Prepared by the regional bureaus of the U. S. Department of State, Background Notes are factual publications about the land, people, history, government, political conditions, economy, and foreign relations of independent states, some dependencies, and areas of special sovereignty. Includes excellent overviews of history and economics for each country or region.
- Geographical Names Information System
- From the U.S. Geographical Survey, contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States. Searchable by name, state or territory, feature type, county, elevation, and population. Results pages provide longitude and latitude, USGS map names, elevation, estimated population of cities and towns, and links to online maps.
