Victoria Advocate Newspaper on Microfilm

The Periodicals collection contains all available microfilm for the local newspaper, the Victoria Advocate, also published as the Texan Advocate, Texian Advocate, and Weekly Advocate. Coverage begins with 1848, but is incomplete due to the lack of available copies when the paper was filmed. Newspapers from the Civil War era are scarce, and few issues from 1857-1879 appear on the microfilm.

The Library has compiled a list of dates available on each reel, from 1848 to 1956. The list shows the order in which dates appear on the reel - many are far from sequential. From 1957 to the present, all issues of the daily paper can be found on the appropriate reels.

For a history of the newspaper, see the article by Dr. Geraldine F. Talley in the Handbook of Texas Online.
