Highlights

Library Systems

The Head of Technical services was heavily involved in the training of the new Cataloger and the review of Cataloging and Acquisitions procedures and policies this year. Both departments in Technical Services will continue to analyze procedures throughout the next fiscal year with the goals of making the workflow in Technical Services as smooth and efficient as possible and creating usable documentation to describe the procedures.

Collection Development activities in Fiscal Year 2006-2007 involved a large weeding and replacement project in Education materials and review of Nursing materials to better serve the new nursing BSN program at UHV.

The Horizon Integrated System software has remained relatively stable this year but the Online Catalog server software continues to be problematic and requires a great deal on maintenance and care. Two new servers were set up this year for the Online Catalog and the Horizon Database Management software. We now run our primary system servers on Red Hat Linux which seems to be very efficient.

Another major project was the installation and setup of a new Horizon module for Inventory, which consists of handheld barcode readers and docking ports and the necessary software. Victoria Public Library has been using the inventory devices successfully for several months.

Other projects this year consisted of instituting batch deletion of withdrawn items for both libraries by the System Administrator, and multiple SQL query requests for various data cleanup projects involving public library OCLC records, and collection development inventories and borrower lists for both libraries.

Acquisitions

As a part of our normal workflow, the Acquisitions Department ordered and processed 2,198 books, 113 Media items, and 41 Reference books during the 2006-2007 Fiscal Year. Departmental procedures were altered to enable the use of electronic voucher approval for University of Houston-Victoria accounts. This means that all purchase order and invoice processing for the UHV is now digital, with only audit copies kept in paper format.

We received 2,474 books as gifts donated to the library. The Jack .O. and Ellen Braman Miller Texana Gift collection was a particularly large bequest consisting of 2,182 items, which the department is in the midst of processing. We are also reviewing past gift files with the objective of making all past data files compatible to place them into a searchable database at some point in the future.

This fiscal year the Acquisitions department received and processed and extremely large number of Curriculum textbooks in three different batches. The first group of curriculum materials were the corrected textbooks that were adopted last year, but were not sent out to us. These were processed, cataloged, and sent to the curriculum shelves on the first floor. The second batch of textbooks received were the titles that are being considered for adoption this year. Those were checked off of the list and put in the conference room on the third floor for public viewing. The last group of materials received were the Spanish version of the textbooks that are being considered for adoption, which are being stored until the current approval lists are published.
