Accomplishments
- Greg Garcia joined our staff in September 2005.
- In November 2005, the VRHC began remaining open an additional 10 evening hours per week. This was made possible by the addition of March Dennis to our staff.
- Sheron Barnes received the UHV Employee of the Month award in January 2006.
- Renovation of the dark room was completed with funds donated by the Victoria County Genealogical Society. Improvements include new cabinetry and a new sink. The Victoria Advocate photos were re-house in file cabinets.
- The Photo Collection database was redesigned. Duplicate records were removed and typographical errors were corrected. Guidlines for record imput were implemented. Staff participating in this project were: David Ticen, Sheron Barnes, Bob Allen, and Karen Locher.
Publications and Presentations
- Four articles, written by Sheron Barnes were printed in quarterly issues of Victoria: ‘Crossroads of South Texas, published by the Victoria County Genealogical Society:
- "The Alfreda Mueller Huck Collection," (Fall 2005 issue).
- “Records from the County Tax Assessor-Collector at the Victoria Regional History Center,” (Winter 2005 issue).
- “Freedmen’s Bureau Records” (Spring 2006).
- “Victoria County Court Records in the Victoria Regional History Center” (Summer 2006).
- Greg Garcia began a series titled “Yesterday’s News” for the Victoria: ‘Crossroads of South Texas published by the Victoria County Genealogical Society. His first article was published in the Summer 2006 issue.
- Sheron Barnes submitted an article about the History Center and the Barry Crouch Collection which was published in the South Texas Researcher in August 2006 (http://www.sanantonio.gov/library/texana/newsletter/str0608.doc).
- In April 2006, the History Center hosted a book signing ceremony for Charles Spurlin for his book, Navigation of the Lower Guadalupe River.
- VHRC participated in the 2nd annual “Silk Purse…Sow’s Ear?” Antique Appraisal Fair sponsored by the Museum of the Coastal Bend on September17, 2005.
