Accomplishments
Media Bibliographies
Thanks to Dave Ticen, we transferred the majority of our Media Library Bibliographies from Procite to Access. Rather than having numerous subject categories for our bibliographies, we now have only three (Allied Health, Humanities, and Social Sciences). There will be more changes made on our bibliographies and hopefully we will be able to come up with a method that will allow us to get more records printed on a page than what we can currently print.
Shifting
We found it necessary to shift our materials several times this past fiscal year in order to make more room for the curriculum textbooks and other audiovisual materials that were being purchased. In order to do so, we shifted the Pre-K to 2nd grade curriculum textbooks to Room 301C within the Media Library. This room is also being used to house the textbooks that are currently being considered for state adoption. Although curriculum materials are weeded in accordance to the Texas Education Agency policies, consideration for extra space will be necessary due to the types of material that is now being sent such as “Big Books” or the “Silver Burdett Making Music” series that is in large kits which will not fit on regular shelving. There are approximately 5,983 items in the Curriculum Collection and about 500 of those items are materials that must be shelved on shelves that are “30” wide.
Tiltrac Use
Since we are not able to distinguish Tiltrac use from different locations other than the Media Library, I e-mailed all VC on-campus nursing faculty a short survey during the 2006 Spring semester to see if they were using the Tiltrac from the classrooms located in the Allied Health Building. Below are the three survey questions and the faculty replies. Please note that the majority of the users were LVN faculty who teach evening classes. Our ADN faculty place video’s on reserve for their students to come and view in the Media Library.
I would like to note that several of our off-campus nursing faculty found out about the survey and they would like to be able to access videocassettes from the Tiltrac. I hope during the 2006/07 fiscal year, we will be able to figure out a way that this will be possible.
SURVEY QUESTIONS
- 1. Have you shown video’s in your classroom by using the Media Library Tiltrac equipment this semester?
- Answer: There were 5 replies of yes
- 2. If you used the Tiltrac, did you find it beneficial or do you still prefer
the conventional method of physically having them delivered to the Allied Health
Building?
- Answer: (3) faculty preferred to use the conventional method (2) Will reserve video’s to be viewed via the Tiltrac in their classrooms
- 3. If you used the Tiltrac were there any problems that you might have encountered?
- Answers: I used the Tiltrac only once with difficulty but I think that it is a good way to show video’s. Thanks for your help; I was able to resolve the problem.
- I personally have not had any problems except for the one day when I attempted to show a film and someone else was viewing it. It took 20 minutes of my classroom time before we were able to view it in its entirety. Using the Tiltrac does not make a big difference when a film is requested for the LVN day and evening program but I find it very helpful when the film has been reserved by both the VN and ADN faculty. We don’t see each other as often or our schedules are different making sharing a cassette tape more difficult.
