2002/2003

Expanded Resources:

During the 2002/2003 fiscal year a number of DVD’s were added to the Media Library collection.  Students are now requesting this type of material instead of the conventional VHS format.  This type of format currently falls under the video format as far as statistics are generated by Horizon.  It might be that next year, we will need to separate video from DVD in Horizon.

Collection Maintenance and Development

There was some weeding done in the Media Library during the 2002/2003 fiscal year although not as much as previous years.  The phonograph collection was weeded extensively compared to any of the other formats.

Media Reserves:

Electronic Reserve Pilot Project
During the 2002/2003 fiscal year, 204 music tracks from compact disks were converted to MP3 for Lori Williamson to put in Electronic Reserve for Mrs. Ann Johanson’s Music Appreciation class.  There were a number of problems with this procedure most of which were beyond our control.  A primary problem was that students did not have the proper computer equipment at home in order to download the music pieces.  This is a relative new process, but with time, we will be able to make full use of it.
Faculty use of Media Reserve
Victoria College Faculty made great use of media reserves this year. Items were placed on reserve for 52 VC aculty members. The University of Houston-Victoria also used media reserve. Six UHV faculty members placed items on media reserve for their students.

Digital Rights:

We were able to purchase the digital rights to approximately 12 video programs so that the Instructional Support Services Department at UHV could digitize the videocassettes in order for them to be used on-line by the Arts and Sciences students.  UHV faculty is now submitting requests for digital rights as they submit their AV purchase requests.  The purchase of digital rights adds an additional burden to our AV budget but this is something that will need to be worked out between the Distant Education Departments and the Library.

Tiltrac Use:

There was a slight increase in the use of the Tiltrac system.  58 more videocassettes were requested for viewing compared to the previous year.  This will increase considerably as students are able to view reserve video programs from other locations.
